GUWAHATI: NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) lived up to coach Cesar Farias’ promise of fighting till ‘we have the slightest chance to make it through’ as they beat FC Pune City 3-2 on Wednesday night at the Indira Gandhi Stadium to stay alive in the race to bag the last semifinal slot in ISL 2.
The Highlanders, who finished their league engagements with 20 points from 14 matches, will however have to wait and hope that Chennaiyin FC lose to Pune in their final game on Saturday. Such a result would keep Chennaiyin on 19 points and push NEUFC to the semis. It was end of the road for Pune, who have 15 points from 13 matches, and can at best play party-poopers for Chennaiyin. Senegal forward Victor Mendy played a key role for NEUFC, shouldering a heavy workload – not only up front but also coming down to assist the midfield.
